Emmanuel Macron holds umbrella for Slovak leader, refuses to give it to an aide
French President Emmanuel Macron held up an umbrella for Slovakia’s prime minister, Igor Matovic, when it started to drizzle during their joint statement.
Macron held the umbrella for around three minutes until the end of the news briefing, and as the two leaders walked up the Elysee steps, after which Matovic took it and handed it over to an aid.
In the video, an aide is seen trying to relieve Macron of the umbrella but he declined and continued holding it over the Slovak leader.
A female aide came out and handed the French leader a black umbrella. Macron took it and held it over his Slovakian guest.
A second female aide arrived and offered to hold the first umbrella for Macron. He gestured to her that there was no need.
When the two men finished speaking to the media, and turned to walk back up the steps into the Elysee Palace, a military aide approached and offered to take Macron’s umbrella. Macron ignored him, and kept holding it over Matovic.
The second female aide then came back and again offered to take the umbrella, but Macron again brushed her off.
